Transcutaneous Biliruometer Its Use in Fullterm Infants

Abstract
The transcutaneous bilirubinometer was evaluated in 343 fullterm infants during the first 9 days of life. The anscutaneous bilirubin readings at forehead and sternum correlated better with serum bilirubin(forehead; r=0.80 P<0.001, sternum; 0.82
P<0.001)
than those at other sites. The mean value of readings at forehead and sternum ncreased the correlation coefficient to 0.83(P<0.001). The accuracy of TcB was better at higher serum bilirubin evels. TcB readings of 20 or greater at forehead and
sternum,
were usually indicative of a serum bilirubin 13 ng/dl or more. TcB readings of 17 or less at forehead and sternum were usually indicative of serum bilirubin less han 10mg/dl. The TcB is a useful device for screening in fullterm infants for
hyperbilirubinemia, but should not be used as an alternative to serum bilirubin determination in all cases.
